Czechia’s largest battery storage facility begins operations
BESS Lipnice, a 57-megawatt battery-based energy storage system, has been commissioned in Czechia and is providing services to ČEPS.

Czechia commissioned its largest battery-based energy storage system, BESS Lipnice, on 31 August 2026, bringing a 57-megawatt facility into operation and connecting its activity to services for ČEPS, the Czech Transmission System Operator.
BESS Lipnice can absorb surplus electricity from the market and feed electricity back into the grid. The facility is intended to help stabilize the power system by storing electricity when it is available and supplying it back when the operating conditions support that use.
Its operation is governed directly by current electricity prices. The storage unit analyzes conditions across various electricity markets in real time and uses that information to decide when to buy, store or sell energy. This means the system’s activity is linked to market conditions rather than following a fixed operating schedule.
Jiří Strnad, a board member of BESS Lipnice and Czech director of the Slovak energy investment group Energy Investment Fund, said the facility’s main focus will be on the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.
The day-ahead and intraday markets are therefore the central commercial settings identified for the facility’s operation. BESS Lipnice will assess available market information while also providing services to ČEPS, which operates the Czech transmission system.
The commissioning adds a 57-megawatt battery-based storage unit to Czechia’s electricity system. Its stated functions are to absorb surplus electricity, return electricity to the grid and respond to changing prices across electricity markets. The research information does not specify the facility’s physical location beyond its name or provide details on its construction, ownership structure or investment cost.
