U.S. stocks finished a mixed session on Friday as investors weighed a fresh batch of fourth-quarter earnings and shifting sector leadership. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed lower, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite managed small gains, but all three major benchmarks still ended the week down, reflecting how selective buying has been as results roll in across industries.

In the session described, the Dow fell 0.6% to close at 49,098.71, while the Nasdaq rose 0.3% to 23,501.24 and the S&P 500 edged up 0.03% to 6,915.61. Sector performance was split, with several defensive and consumer-linked areas showing strength, while financials lagged. The CBOE Volatility Index, often treated as a gauge of market anxiety, rose to 16.09.

Company reports added to the uneven tone. Capital One posted adjusted earnings that missed expectations, though revenue topped forecasts, and its shares fell sharply. Alaska Air’s adjusted results beat expectations, while revenue slightly missed, and its stock rose. Bank First also reported earnings above estimates with revenue that surpassed expectations, helping its shares move higher.

The broader takeaway for many traders is that earnings dispersion remains high: some firms are getting rewarded for resilient margins or upbeat commentary, while others are being punished for even modest shortfalls. With rate expectations, consumer spending trends and credit conditions all in focus, investors appear to be rotating quickly between sectors and stories rather than committing to a single market narrative.
